General
What can I do to prepare my items for the move to ensure efficiency and safety? Should I disassemble furniture or group items in a certain way?
Absolutely, your efforts to organize before moving day are not just helpful; they're integral to a smooth and efficient moving process. Here's how you can make a significant difference:
  1. Sort and Label Clearly: It's invaluable when customers sort their belongings by category (e.g., kitchen items, bedroom linens, office books) and clearly label the boxes. It allows us, the movers, to understand which boxes belong together, ensuring that we can place them correctly in the moving truck and in your new home. Labels that indicate a box's contents or its designated room are incredibly helpful, as are notes about which boxes contain fragile items.
  2. Disassembly Decisions: While we're equipped to disassemble furniture, doing so yourself ahead of time can expedite the process. However, there's a caveat. Please keep all screws, bolts, and other fasteners attached to the furniture pieces or in a clearly labeled bag. This practice makes reassembly faster and reduces the risk of losing essential hardware. If a piece of furniture is complex, leaving it to us might be best to avoid damage.
  3. Accessible Pathways: Creating clear paths by moving boxes to central locations like the living room or garage can help. This step reduces the time we spend navigating around the house, allowing us to focus on securely loading your belongings. However, avoid stacking everything in one spot; spreading out the boxes a bit allows the crew to work simultaneously on carrying different items.
  4. Essentials Box: Prepare an "essentials" box with items you'll need immediately upon arrival—like toiletries, basic tools, important documents, clothes for a day or two, and any chargers. Make sure to set this box aside and inform us so it can be loaded last and be easily accessible.
  5. Pre-Move Communication: If you have items requiring special attention, such as antiques, artwork, or electronics, please let us know beforehand. Prior knowledge allows us to come prepared with the necessary equipment and packing materials to safeguard your valuables.
By following these steps, you're not only facilitating a quicker move, but you're also contributing to the safe transport of your items. Your preparation combined with our expertise ensures that everything arrives at your new home in the best condition possible.

How accurate will the moving estimate be?

While we can't guarantee absolute accuracy, At Last Stop Moving, we use the industry's best moving software to as precise an estimate as possible. Some of the factors that affect your final estimate include:

  • Number of items being moved – For the most accurate estimate, always ensure to list out all the items that you want moved.
  • Services you need – If you need additional services such as Packing and Unpacking, these will affect your estimate as they are charged separately. We do not charge for Disassembly or Reassembly of furniture, weight of your items, or loading and unloading the truck.
  • Travel TIme – It is the industry standard to charge for Travel Time. The Travel Time Charge is to compensate the movers for their drive from the office to your location, and from the destination back to the office after the move.
  • Fuel Surcharge – We also charge a small amount as Fuel Surcharge.
  • Materials – In case you intend to purchase your packing materials from us, this will also be reflected in your estimate.

How can I keep costs down during my move?

Hey, we get it. Moving can be expensive. Here at Last Stop Moving, we want to help you save as much as possible. So here are some steps you can take to cut down your moving costs:

  • Declutter – Moving is not just about transporting stuff from point A to point B, it’s about a fresh start. Take some time to go over all your items and donate or get rid of all the items you don’t need anymore. This will reduce the number of items that need to be moved.
  • Do your own packing – Packing and Unpacking service carries a separate charge. If you have the time, you can do your own packing to cut down this service charge.
  • Be flexible – Moving rates, especially in Edmonton, usually vary depending on different factors such as season changes, weather patterns, on-peak and off-peak hours, etc. You can opt to move when the charges are minimal.

Is it necessary for me to get valuation ("moving insurance")?

Well, it all boils down to your preference. At Last Stop Moving, we take exceeding measures to ensure that your items arrive at their destination safely and securely. In the event of damages or loss of your items, we offer coverage at no additional cost (up to 60 cents/pound/article). If you feel that our coverage is not sufficient, then you might consider getting additional coverage.

Some customers seek additional coverage because they own valuable possessions such as antiques, electronics, artwork, etc; and they feel that limited coverage might not be adequate to compensate for damages or loss. Or, if you feel that there is an increased risk of damage based on the circumstances of your move, for example, long-distance moves, fragile items in your inventory, or unpredictable weather conditions.

Whatever the case, it will solely depend on you. Call Us for clarification on Valuation Options available to you.

How Long Does a Move take?

It depends, Last Stop Moving uses an hourly rates model. This means that we charge based on how long the movers will take to complete your move. While we cannot give exact time estimates, you can expect 2-3 hours for studios and One-Bedroom Apartments, 3-5 hours for 2 bedrooms, 4-6 hours for 3 bedrooms, and 6+ hours for larger homes. Bear in mind that factors like number of items, distance covered, and services required can affect the time taken on the move.

How to choose the Best Movers in Edmonton: A checklist

You have all these plans that you need to make for your upcoming move, and finding reliable and trustworthy movers in Edmonton is part of that plan. This can be overwhelming. We want to make this process easy for you, so we came up with some pointers to help you make an informed decision.

  1. Clear, Written Estimates
Having your estimate in written format is extremely critical. You can refer to them later on when evaluating different estimates, you can use it as a reference for all communication with your movers, and it helps you avoid verbal promises. Always request a detailed estimate that outlines the costs for your move, the services you request for, an inventory of all the items that you need moved and any additional charges that you will incur. A professional and reliable company, such as Last Stop Moving, will ensure that you have all this information on your estimate before booking your move. Beware of companies that DO NOT offer estimates.

Compare apples to apples. You want to make sure that all the information you provide to all moving companies you talk to is the same and accurate. This is the only way to ensure that your comparisons of all your estimates is viable.

Hidden charges usually come in at the last moment. As you talk to different moving companies, always inquire about charges for things such as Fuel Surcharge, Stair Fees, charges based on weight, and any other potential extra charges to avoid surprises.
  2. Physical Location
Check out the companies you are considering and confirm that they have a physical presence in Edmonton. This means that your movers should have a local address that you can visit. This helps to prove the legitimacy of the movers your are dealing with. Take note of companies that have an Online-Only Presence. Local presence allows for in-person consultations and easier issue resolution incase of any complications.

Next, you can also check online reviews. Take some time to go through the reviews of past customers to evaluate the company’s reputation and quality of service they offered in the past.
  3. Comprehensive Cargo Insurance
An insured company will offer some form of compensation in case any of your belongings get damaged. Let’s say maybe your TV gets broken during the move, will your moving company help you cover the cost for repairs? Inquire what sort of coverage your company offers. If you feel that the coverage offered doesn’t give you peace of mind, then consider additional valuation from Third-Party Compnaies for your valuable items.

You should also inquire about the claims process. How long will it take for your company to process your claim? Will the process be transparent and easy for you? Go for movers with a clear and hassle-free claims process in case of damage or loss.

At Last Stop Moving, we offer coverage of up to 60cents/pound/article. In the event of damage or loss, contact us directly or fill the claim form on our File A Claim Page, a consultant will contact you as soon as possible to guide you through the claims process.
  4. Proven Experience & Expertise
How long has your mover been in business? With moving, experience matters. Movers who’ve spent years perfectly the art of moving are better suited to facilitate a seamless move for you. The best movers in Edmonton have built up this skill for at least several years. It also goes without saying, but going for a licensed moving company in Edmonton is your number one priority.
